Ever wonder why the price of this food fluxuates so much? I am talking not of the occasional price increase but month to month five bucks up, five bucks down. This is NOT the only cat food in the world. It’s not even considered the most nutritious, quite frankly, if you read what’s in it there are plenty of fillers. I started paying more attention, and I don’t see a compelling reason to spend so much money other than my cats really do like it and generally consistently eat it unlike a few other brands.
But I also notice this: Royal Canin turns rancid fast. It can’t sit in the bowl for more than a few hours. Nobody wants to let food lay around anyway, but most foods can be noshed on for a day. There is the rancid factor, the filler factor, and the tiny can factor which makes me wonder now, why spend so much money on this cat food?
I had to start buying this at another outlet also because of the inconsistency in shipping. I learned tonight that Amazon while offering “free shipping” if you spend more than $35 also treats those buyers like the lepers of the customers. Your order gets booted back to the end of the line, the statement of when it should arrive — as stated in the confirmation email — means nothing. I talked tonight with an Amazon employee who was honest — wow — and I believe her and appreciate her honesty. She said if the truck comes and is filled up, the free ship orders will sit in the warehouse and wait. And wait. And wait. If every single truck is full, well heck it’s just too bad. I’ve waited once three weeks for two 24-packs to ship and finally I just cancelled it. Now that is abusive, Amazon.
Why entice people to spend more money with free shipping if those who take it are going to be treated like garbage? I started buying this at a cat food store that is competitive in price, in fact cheaper, and free ship over $50 and they get their orders out asap, I mean consistently. They go out the same day if you order early. Shame on you, Amazon.
So I am asking my sell why am I spending so much money on a cat food that is at best mediocre nutritionally, and then get resentful customer service from Amazon who said hey we’ll give you FREE SHIPPING if you spend more than $35. It is illuminating and just to learn that I am going to wean my cats off this and continue to buy food at chewy.com where I can get free shipping and get it WITH A SMILE.
original review….
My cats love this food, above all others I’ve tried and over the years I’ve given them a chance at some others. But honestly, I don’t know why Royal Canin is so expensive. It has fillers just like other cat and dog foods. It is nourishing, but so are most other cat and dog foods of all prices — if you read the label, their contents meet the requirements of the associations (it is noted on the cans). Even some cheap cat foods have all the necessary vitamins and minerals.
I think it is just their formula that is tasty for cats. I’m referring to specifically the Adult Instinctive and Intense Beauty.
My cats would not touch the larger can with the “loaf” food. I wouldn’t either, if I were them.
My cat won’t eat any of their dry foods. I think Royal Canin makes its money on a few items so they make them very expensive. In a year the 3 oz cans went from $1.19 to $1.49 — a pretty big jump. But Jaz and Samantha like it, they do not leave any in the bowl so when I can look for it on sale. And do look around — there are plenty of sellers who have it on discount.
I left off one star because I do think it is over-priced.
update: I went to order this again and the price is still good. But it’s not available until three to five weeks? Why? It is available at another outlet not affiliated with Amazon right away, same price. Maybe there is not enough kept in stock.

Note that packets have slightly larger chunks of the cat food than the can version. I prefer the cans because it’s hard to get everything out of the packet without cutting them open.
It’s important to love your cat. Please love your cat. Maybe you have more than one. Even better. Give your cats all the love.

Ordered these for my sister in law who could not find this product anywhere in her part of the province. Happened to stumble upon these on Amazon and she jumped at the offer. She swears by this food for her cats!

I have a ragdoll and she loves royal cans. But I decide to change some other brand’s cans which is better than royal and the price is same. I think lots of cats loves royal cans but the royal has lots of meat by products. Meat by products means the meat is not dry meat. It’s meat powder which has some chemical stuff inside. Also, royal has lots of carbohydrates which can increase cat’s weight. Fat is not a healthy style. The most important thing is that royal has the same price as other no wheat, no meat products, no carbohydrates cans. So, if I spent same money, I will choose the better one, more healthy one. Also, I want my cat eat better food and have a healthy life. I love cats, I want all the guys who have cats know this truth. If you guys don’t trust me, you can compare by yourself. Choose a no grain can and compare the ingredients and price with royal’s cans. I like royal, because I have a ragdoll and royal have specific cat food for ragdoll. It’s easy for a new guy like me to feed a cat. But, I’m not stupid, the price of royal cans is not worth.
